We're at home in the skills of upholstery styling, comfort, ergonomic support and adjustability. We're keenly interested in global chair design trends and understand what makes a great chair great.
This knowledge and passion is applied right across our seating design and sourcing programs so that we're seating people in chairs that they love.
Eden was founded in 1989 by Philip Win, following his upholstery training where he learnt the intricacies of seating manufacture and seating comfort. For many of the rest of our team, training has been from on the factory floor, behind the sewing machines and staplers and in the upholstery booths, then in our suppliers’ factories and at international furniture fairs.
There’s multiple decades of chair immersement between us, and that knowledge feeds what we’re doing for our customers every day. Talk to us or ask us about anything seating, we love to inform and share and to keep building that knowledge of seating and seating users’ needs.
Eden's seating solutions are made to work specifically for you. Our skilled team of in-house upholsterers, and our componentised sourcing model allow us to readily accommodate unique requirements in colour, upholstery, size, and function. Something especially for you is often a simple upgrade or modification to one of standard seating ranges.

Durability
Product durabilty and endurance begins at the start of the manufacture process for Eden seating. With our overseas suppliers, as much as our own upholstery and assembly processes, we get involved in each step of the manufacture process, every material choice and manufacture method, so that we're assured that quality is built into our seating from the core.
Eden products are backed with genuine warranties that you can trust. Our seating is warrantied is for a minimum of 5 years in normal commercial use, and our chair repair processes are fast and simple.
In the factory at Eden we have a skilled upholstery and assembly team who are involved in our manufacture right across the range, from assembly of simple stacker chairs, task chair upholstery, to manufacture of complex deluxe soft seating. We work with local foam manufacturers, timber suppliers and fabric suppliers to be able to offer full and flexible solutions to your seating needs. Our seating is delivered fully assembled ready for immediate use.
We have indicated which chairs are manufactured and upholstered here in NZ. To qualify for a NZ Manufactured icon, the seating is at least 90% NZ content including materials and labour. Chairs that have a NZ Upholstered icon, are made of a combination of local and imported components and are upholstered and assembled to order in our factory.
Eden offer warranties on all of our seating products, for between 5 and 20 years in normal commercial-use situations.
Our warranties cover faulty workmanship, mechanical or construction failure, and within New Zealand only, repair freight and labour costs also. Our warranty repair processes are fast and simple.

Ergonomics
Ergonomics is the understanding of people in their working environment – how their tools and equipment interplay with human factors and combine to create a healthy work experience.
For over 30 years Eden has been studying people and chairs, and manufacturing ergonomic seating for people in their workspaces. We understand that chairs should be made to suit people, and we believe that everyone should be comfortable in their chair at work.
Ergonomic chairs offer adjustability and movement that allow you to change your seated position so your body is well-supported as you work.
Our ergonomic task chairs feature three key types of adjustment mechanisms:
3-lever Mechanism - features separate Seat Angle and Back Angle adjustments, plus Seat Height, and Back Height adjustments.
2-lever Mechanism - features Back Angle, Seat Height, and Back Height adjustments.
Synchro Mechanism – features Seat-with-Back Angle adjustment, where seat and back tilt synchronously together in varying ratio to support you as you move and work.
Synchro mechanisms are designed to be moving with you as you work, or you can choose to lock the floating tilt feature.
Seat Height, and Back Height or Lumbar Support Height are also adjustable.
A Rocker Tilt mechanism is a simple tilting mechanism where the chair upper can rock or can be locked in a fixed position.
If you’re computer-user sitting for extended periods of time, understanding the basics of positive sitting posture can make a huge difference to your comfort and energy levels, your productivity, and long-term health. Here are our recommendations for healthy comfortable computer use:
1. Elbows by your side and level with the keyboard
To be able to use the computer comfortably for extended periods of time, you need to be able to use your keyboard and mouse without stretching. Your shoulders should be relaxed, and your elbows close by your side and approximately level with your keyboard.
2. Eyes level with the top of your screen
To protect your neck and shoulder muscles from strain and pain your eyes should be approximately level with the top of your screen.
3. Back properly supported
Always sit near the back of your seat. Make sure the chair backrest is adequately supporting your back and allowing you to sit with your back straight. The backrest lumbar support should be positioned to support your lower back.
4. Feet flat on the floor
Your feet should be flat on the floor or on a footrest. If your feet aren’t reaching the floor or somehow supported, there’s likely to be pressure under your thighs which can inhibit circulation and cause discomfort or cramp.
5. Open angle sitting position
We recommend sitting with your torso and thighs at an angle a little more open than 90 degrees. This open-angle sitting position allows for good circulation and lung function.
Any prolonged sitting position can be tiring. As you’re working you can change your chair backrest angle or seat angle from time to time to allow your spine and muscles a variation in position.
Health professionals recommend that we stand up or move away from our seated position at least once every hour. If you have a height-adjustable desk you can alternate sitting and standing throughout the day.
The introduction of our Spectrum chair in 1990 was the beginning of a new era in ergonomic chairs for New Zealand. It's powerful lumbar support, cradle contoured seat, and multi-function adjustability quickly made it a market favourite.
Work ways and workspaces have changed immensely since then, but people's seated experience is still at heart of our focus. The same values and principles that brought Spectrum to the market, are behind the building of each of our ergonomic task seating ranges.
Certifications
Backing up our internal quality and durability control processes, many of our chair ranges are independently certified to international standards, and Eden as a company are certified to key international operational standards.
AS/NZS 4438, Level 6 - Government standard for computer-user chairs
Government standard AS/NZS 4438 specifies durability, adjustability, and dimensional requirements for computer-user seating. AS/NZS 4438 is the non-obligatory government standard for computer-user chairs in Australia and New Zealand: Australian/New Zealand Standard for Height Adjustable Swivel Office Chairs AS/NZS 4438 (1997).
Testing and certification of compliance with the standard is undertaken by the Australasian Furnishing Research & Development Institute (AFRDI). Products can be certified to different levels of the durability severity. Level 6 is the most severe testing level of the standard, and certification to Level 6 is often known as AFRDI Level 6.
AFRDI 142 Rated Load - Chair durability certifications
AFRDI 142 is a certification developed by AFRDI (Australasian Furnishing Research & Development Institute) to certify seating for rated load performance based on user weight and shift length.
AFRDI 142 certifies chairs as suitable for use by heavy users or in heavy-use situations. AFRDI 142 tests and certifies both swivel and fixed seating for users up to 135kg, 160kg, 180kg and 300kg.
AFRDI 151 is a certification developed by AFRDI to certify fixed height seating for rated load performance based on user weight.
AFRDI 151 certifies chairs as suitable for use by heavy users or in heavy-use situations. AFRDI 151 tests and certifies fixed height seating for users up to 135kg, 160kg, 180kg and 300kg.
ANSI/ BIFMA X5.1 - Chair safety and durability standard
ANSI/ BIFMA X5.1 is a North American safety and durability standard for swivel office chairs. It is widely used globally and many of our imported task chairs are certified to this standard.
AFRDI Green Tick - Product sustainability certification
AFRDI Green Tick is a furniture product sustainability certification developed by AFRDI (Australasian Furniture Research & Development). It certifies that products meet global expectations for the ethical sourcing of materials free from harmful levels of toxic chemicals.
AFRDI Green Tick covers such attributes as Product Stewardship, Compliance with Laws and Regulations, Fitness for Purpose, Materials Selection, Hazardous Substances, Indoor Environment Quality, Disassembly Recycling Modularity and Product Refurbishment.
The AFRDI Green Tick is recognised by NZ Green Building Council (NZGBC) and Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) allowing certified products to contribute to a Green Star building rating.
UL Environment GreenGuard Gold - Product chemical emissions certification
GreenGuard Gold is a certification standard that ensures product meet strict limits for chemical emissions, contributing to healthier indoor environments. It certifies that product chemical emissions are at safe levels, in view of minimising indoor air pollution and potential chemical exposure.
Products certified to GREENGUARD Gold undergo rigorous scientific testing in the USA to meet some of the world’s most stringent chemical emissions requirements.
FSC® Chain of Custody - Materials sustainability certification
Forestry Stewardship Council®'s FSC certification is the world’s most trusted sustainable forest management solution, and the FSC chain of custody certification provides assurance that the processed timber used in certified furniture production is sourced from forest operations that are managed in socially, environmentally and economically responsible ways. It specifically verifies that FSC-certified material has been identified and separated from ineligible and unacceptable material as it makes its way along the supply chain from the forest to the market.
Eden have been audited to certify our FSC chain of custody system, and our chairs displaying the FSC logo are FSC certified and use timber components from sustainably managed forests.
Toitū Net Carbonzero Certification - Low carbon footprint verification
Toitū’s Net CarbonZero certifies that a product's lifecycle carbon emissions in accordance with international standards.
Toitū’s Net CarbonZero's programme ensures accurate measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and carbon footprint, and includes implementation of strategies to manage, reduce and offset the subsequent impacts. Additionally, it includes the offset of remaining emissions through verified carbon credits.
It requires that products' lifecycle carbon emissions are measured and in line with international standard ISO 14067; that emissions intensity is managed and reduced in accordance with Toitū requirements; and that remaining cradle-to-grave emissions are compensated for following Toitū requirements.
