Orlo - New Zealand contemporary design

10 Oct 2025

When we contracted Lucas Wotawa to design Eden's own timber chair range, the brief was for a timber chair and stool family that belonged to New Zealanders, both in aesthetics and function. That really translates to a refined minimalism that is generous and enduring.

From Lucas's fifty original hand-sketched concepts we narrowed down to three we felt best embodied New Zealand and Eden. Further defining and refinement achieved the beginnings of Orlo. We were seeing simple forms resonant of childhood timber toys and 80's classroom chairs but with the warm sturdy shapes of nature - this felt like New Zealand.

These beginnings grew to be Orlo through Lucas's traditional handmade models and working examples. In partnership with manufacturing suppliers in Italy and Vietnam, the Orlo development was a slow burn of cross-continent collaboration. Today's finished article is a product of Vietnam, a pairing of local craftmanship with global design skill.

Orlo means hem or border, and aptly it sits at the edge of design, and elegantly delivers in both form and function. Just how New Zealanders like it.
